Itinerary
Your holiday begins in Harrogate, where our Tour Manager waits to greet you at a beautifully restored Georgian hotel, close to the town's Turkish Baths, Royal Pump Room Museum and Valley Gardens.
One of Northern England's most attractive towns, nestled on the edge of the Yorkshire Dales, Harrogate retains many of its Georgian and Victorian features. Its original spa buildings, the Royal Baths, opened in the 1800s when Turkish Baths were first introduced across Britain. The Harrogate baths are the only ones in the country which remain in full working order.
After settling in, there's time to explore, maybe strolling across to the Valley Gardens, or up Parliament Street to visit the famous Betty's Café Tea Rooms or to browse some independent shops before dinner in the hotel.

An enjoyable holiday with a good itinerary

Well organised and pleasant trip. Unfortunately this was curtailed by my wife’s sudden illness which required her attendance at a local hospital on an emergency basis.. We felt we were ‘abandoned’ to sort our return home by ourselves.

The itinerary. 5 ?? Very good. Very enjoyable. The people. 5 ?? Lovely, helpful hotel staff. Good, well- informed guides at the places we visited. Good GRJ guide. The coaches. 4 ?? The coach and driver when based in Harrogate was excellent. The 1st coach when based in Morpeth - uncleaned, uncomfortable coach with a broken seat and late pickups including waiting for 35 minutes outside Alnwick Castle. The 2nd coach and driver was excellent. The trains. 3 ?? For a holiday with Great Rail Journeys, it was disappointing that there was only one train pulled by a steam locomotive. It would have been enjoyable to have experienced another steam heritage railway. (I am aware that the brochure does say that the trains may be diesel). In particular, I was disappointed that the Settle - Carlisle journey was only by an ordinary train. It would have been good to have the holiday arranged around the departure dates of the Pendle Dalesman from Clitheroe, or on the York to Carlisle line when it is a steam locomotive from Hellifield. Nothing compares with going across the Ribblehead Viaduct on a steam train! Food 3 ?? The food in both hotels was disappointing. At the Harrogate Inn, the menus were somewhat uninspiring and repetitive. The fish had soggy batter. At the Linden Hall, the fish pie didn’t contain much fish, the sea bass main course was ok, but looked unappealing as everything on the plate was white and green and the pork belly was undercooked. Sometimes the food was cold.

1 star only because the 2nd hotel was so good. and i enjoyed Harlow Car The first hotel was dreadful and the food inedible. The outings especially to Whitby were too long and the amount of time allocated to each venue was either too long or not long enough. I have always enjoyed holidays with u but this was certainly not up to standard

Good tour and excellent "local" guides, particularly on Settle/Carlisle railway and Whitby RNLI. Only criticism was small amount of "free time" allowed and, sadly, the quality of the tour manager which was below normal Great Rail standard.

Good itinerary and tour leader but expected better hotels with Great Rail and there was too much coach travel.
